About this Book

This tabletop book, which contains Pacific Northwest Native American history, legends, poems, and paintings of Columbia River Oregon and Washington petroglyphs, has taken the author, Laqaixit Tewee (left), nearly 25 years to research. The book is greatly enhanced by the photography of her full-blood Wyam husband, Willard Tewee. The stories come from elders of the Warm Springs, Yakima, Wasco, Paiute, and Umatilla Nations, as well as from voices of the past, such as Indian Mary, a Multnomah Tribal descendant. Many elders have already gone before us, but not without first passing on their knowledge to those who value learning history from the Native American point of view. Some of the Columbia River petroglyph stories date as far back as 8,000 B.C. and as recent as 1855, covering the religious, historical, and moral legends of local Native American elders.
